Oil prices came in higher than expected this year, and the latest US Energy Information Administration outlook is blunt about why. In the third quarter of 2026, prices were about $11 per barrel higher than the agency had projected a month earlier, according to its Short-Term Energy Outlook on global oil markets.
The EIA attributes the premium to disruption: reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and shut-in production. Its forecast assumes that as traffic through the strait gradually increases and idled production restarts, prices will begin to fall, averaging about $78 per barrel by the fourth quarter of 2026.
The demand side is softer
OPEC cut its global oil demand outlook for 2026 amid high energy prices, according to MT Newswires. That is the tension in the market right now: supply disruptions pushing prices up, while high prices themselves cool demand. The International Energy Agency’s September 2026 Oil Market Report tracks the same supply and demand balance across producers.
What it means for African economies
For oil importers, higher crude feeds directly into fuel, transport and electricity costs, and then into food prices. For exporters such as Nigeria, Angola and several others, higher prices are a revenue window that is easy to miss if production is constrained.
For ordinary businesses, the practical planning assumption is volatility rather than a straight line. The EIA’s own forecast depends on a geopolitical condition, the reopening of a key shipping route, that could change quickly in either direction. Businesses that price transport and logistics on a single oil assumption are exposed.
Where to watch
Three signals will settle the direction: whether Strait of Hormuz traffic normalises, how quickly shut-in production returns, and whether OPEC and its allies hold or unwind supply curbs. Until those resolve, expect forecast revisions to keep coming.
